My Characters

Now I reach the first actual posting within this new blog, apart from introducing myself. There are all kinds of things for me to write, and the trouble naturally is where to begin! I find it to be like the very first sentence and first paragraph of a book, which I think is the most difficult because the writer begins from out of nowhere. Once that first sentence of the story is written, then the writer has something to build off of, and they are running.

The best place I think to begin is to speak generally of my own story, the series as a whole being titled The Drifters’ Road, and the first book being titled The Fleeing Company. In particular, I want to introduce the characters to you, as well as what kind of journey they will go on together in not only the first book, but also what journey they will be on in the long term as the story carries on beyond one or two books.

To begin, I have six main characters in total, and their names are Adroegen, Caitren, Edelbir, Kattalin, Gleowan, and Vaenn. Of these six characters, Adroegen is the main protagonist, and then I would say that Caitren is second, though as time goes on, I would say that the two of them will be equal as the main characters. The first book is solely from Adroegen’s point of view, however as the story goes beyond one book, you will get to be in all six of these characters’ consciousness. In this post I will speak more generally, but I will introduce each of them to you in individual posts and speak on each character in some greater detail.

Presently, only one book is published. The second book, as of right now, I am working on, making good progress, and having much fun working on it. I will say in the long term that one general theme for these characters, and perhaps the ultimate theme of the entire series, will be of these six characters each finding their road, or their purpose upon that earth in which the story takes place. There is some kind of path set for all six characters in this story, which they will have to discover as time goes on and as they go on adventures running from and facing evils within those lands.

At the beginning of the first book, Adroegen is a lonely drifter unsure of what he seeks. He had seen many horrors in his past, losing all in his kin one by one under an evil lord in the north named Vyroun and his servant, the goblin chief, before Vyroun was strangely absent for the past decade. Having come close to death several times, and having seen his mother and others in his kin die, Adroegen is unsure what reason there is for himself to still live.

There is a hidden village that he discovered by chance when venturing about where he became friends with the other characters mentioned. Caitren lives with her father there, though in her heart she has always wanted to see the wonders of the world rather than remain hidden. Edelbir, Kattalin, Gleowan, and Vaenn all are unsure of who their mother or father are, or where they come from. Edelbir, Gleowan, and Vaenn were found as infants and taken to that hidden village, while Kattalin only knows that someone, who might have been her father, left her there.

While there had been peace the past decade in the north, Adroegen, upon visiting his friends in this hidden village, finds that he had been tracked by the goblin chief, who razes the village. Only Adroegen’s friends are left alive. The goblin chief reveals that Vyroun has returned and seeks Adroegen’s head. However, both Vyroun and the goblin chief first want Adroegen to return the Night’s Jewel, a magic jewel that he took from the goblin chief just before Vyroun disappeared a decade ago that could hold sway over all foul creatures that walk in the night. The goblin chief tells Adroegen that if he does not return this jewel, then he will hunt and slay Adroegen’s friends.

Adroegen must then lead his friends out of the hidden village and away from danger. At the beginning, none of his friends know how to fight, and Adroegen fears that he cannot keep them from harm. And this venture will be the very beginning of a very long journey for all of these characters, where they will begin to slowly discover who they are and where they come from, as well as what path and purpose is set for each of them. While the venture they go on in this first book consists of them running from a pack of goblins, something greater is set in motion out of them having to leave their home, and this first venture, in the long term, is the very beginning of that grand plan taking place for each of these characters.

I would make just a few more comments. While something is in store for all six characters, and all of them will have their own heroics, ultimately it is Adroegen and Caitren who will carry this story for as long as it goes. I aim to have more timeless themes of courage, friendship and family, selflessness, sacrifice, not giving up in the face of daunting adversity, and things of that sort, much like what is perfectly captured in the Lord of the Rings. Yet while the world will have evil and danger within it, as all fantastical worlds must, otherwise there is no basis for a story, I also intend to make an imaginative world filled with all kinds of wonders, and places in which the reader will want to go and escape to, as traveling to such places is much of what makes us turn to stories I believe.

Here I think is a good place to stop for now. Next, I will go into all of my characters individually, and I could spend much time speaking about them if I am not careful.
